Swaddled in as much warm clothing as he can find, only his battered helmet - minus its plume - reminds the onlooker of his corps and function. His mount is portrayed in the typical condition captured by photographers of the Crimean campaign.

The corporal is armed with the 1796-pattern light cavalry sword, a pair of pistols in the holsters on his saddle-arch, and a 1796-pattern carbine. His mount's saddle and bridle are of the light cavalry pattern, with the saddle covered by a sheepskin. His cloak, folded and strapped above his holsters, gives the saddle a bulky appearance. His valise is strapped behind his saddle, and attached to it is a coil of rope and a cat-o'-nine-tails, two items essential to his duties. Maj. Thomas Trout of the 7th Hussars (81) reported for duty at Aldershot with the newlyraised Corps of Mounted Police.
