Levels of Thinking In addition to a concept of intelligence, executive function, and the sociocultural nature of learning, the science of psychology has also provided us with a way to think about different forms of thinking. Educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom worked with a group of colleagues to develop a “taxonomy” or classification system of thinking that could be used in writing goals and objectives (Bloom & Krathwohl, 1956). The result was a six-tiered model for classifying thinking arranged in order of complexity.

3) As children leave preschool and enter kindergarten and the early primary grades, these cognitive and social–emotional competencies become even more important as children take on increasing responsibility for focusing, directing, and persisting in their learning process. Moran and Gardner (2010) coined the phrase “hill, skill, and will” in explaining the critical role of executive function. When children are able to integrate what they want to accomplish (the hill) with what they can do (skill), and direct their energy to accomplishing goals they set (the will), they are developing the processes of executive function.

Project work is best done not in isolation but within a community of learners who converse and communicate about what they are learning. Teachers listening to and talking with children during the project process is important. A good example of project work that came directly from observations of children is the Camera Project in Lora Taylor’s preschool classroom. This project began when Lora noticed what children were doing with a camera in the housekeeping area. As she observed their interest in the camera, she asked them questions.
