The acids you have used in this chapter, such as vinegar and lemon juice, are weak acids. Strong acids, such as sulfuric, hydrochloric, and nitric acids, form large numbers of hydrogen ions in water and are more dangerous to work with because they can damage flesh. Weak acids do not form nearly as many ions; consequently, they do not conduct electricity nearly as well as strong acids. Similarly, weak bases, such as ammonia, produce far fewer hydroxide ions than do strong and more dangerous bases, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
Fill the two cans with water. Place the can with the holes arranged from top to bottom at the edge of a sink. Turn the can so that water coming out the holes will flow into the sink. Quickly remove the tape from the holes. From which hole does the water project farthest? What does this experiment tell you about pressure as you go deeper in water? Next, take the can that has six holes punched around it near its bottom. Hold this can over the sink. Quickly remove the tape. How does the projection of water from each hole compare?
Most of the air has been pumped out of the can. The outside of the can is attached to a spring. A series of levers connects the spring to a chain that turns a pointer over the dial of the barometer. When air pressure decreases, the sides of the can move outward, the spring is stretched less, and the pointer indicates a smaller number on the dial.
