In 1933, there were widespread rumors that Piłsudski favored launching a preventative war against Hitler’s nascent regime. 58 This adroit Nazi diplomacy ensured that rather than ushering in state-to-state conflict, Hitler’s regime brought about the first thaw in state-to-state relations between Poland and Germany since the end of the previous war.
